from the WKA 2009 Nationals. Students
from Blackpool Karate attended the
WKA (World Kickboxing Association)
British Team Qualifiers in the west
midlands on the 11th of October. Six
members competed and they all took
medals galore. Dominating in the kata
and forms categories. Tom Roe took
two silver medals in the adult weapons
section, Matt Roe took a silver and
a bronze in the adult weapons section,
and coach Gareth Stubbs took two golds
and a silver across the forms categories.
Newcomer to the junior section, Tyrone
Wassell impressed both the judges
and onlookers as he produced a dazzling
debut and took Gold in the Weapons
section, as did Julian Jesson in the
veterans category. Patricia Shaw fought
excellently in the ladies Kickboxing
category, and took a well deserved
bronze despite some tricky refereeing
during her qualifying rounds. All
in all, 6 members took 10 medals and
all qualified in their category of
choice and will be training with the
British Team until the WKA World Championships
in Portugal 2010. If you wish to support
the team, they will be conducting
sponsored events throughout 2010 all
over Blackpool. |

| Day
in the life of a competitive kickboxer
at a European Tournament. Follow our
Kickboxing Team, Alex and his dad
through a day at a typical tournament.
Kickboxing is ideal for fitness, but
a competitive player has to train
regularly and our approach to coaching
is to practise the techniques you'll
use in competition in a way to help
you apply them under pressure.
|
| |
|
The day starts with a warmup and Connor
(a team mate" is lending a hand.
Alex is getting all the muscles loose
and going through a series of drills
to replicate the main event. This
is followed by watching the other
people he'll be competing against
and working out his game plan. Then
the rounds start and you have to win
your events to progress through the
leaderboard. |
| |
|
During the rounds, your coach gives
you feedback "Dale seen in the
clip is a fantastic analyst and provides
clear advice" keeping your head
concentrating in the game. At the
end of the bouts, you're waiting for
the score cards to be collected (continuous)
or the electronic scoring system shows
the winner. Here Alex and his dad
are awaiting feedback on a close decision
"which one looks more nervous?".
If you make it through, you get a
shiny medal at the end of the day.
Alex's dad looks relieved that the
competition has finished and Alex
treats his dad to a happy meal on
the way home. |

This
is undoubtedly the classic walk in
the Yorkshire Dales. The
walk is approximately 23 miles in
length depending on the slight variations
available on the route. What is compulsory
though is that you must climb Pen-y-ghent
(694m), Whernside (736m) and Ingleborough
(723m). That’s a long way that includes
an awful lot of climbing and an awful
lot of descending. The point I'm trying
to make is that you need to be fit
for this one, it is a full days walking
you will be undertaking should you
choose to do it.
The walk started at 0800am at the
car park near the café our
first peak will be Ingleborough. The
weather was cloudy but dry on reaching
the top, the weather closed in with
mist and driving rain after a short
break and some happy snaps we made
our way cross country over to Whernside.
The climb was hard and steep and with
driving rain and wind was to say the
least difficult, met our support vehicle
in a car park near the viaduct had
refreshments then made our way to
the last peak Pen-y-ghent, due to
all the rain we had a very boggy area
to get across had to jump a few streams
and I found myself missing my footing
and landing in a boggy area up to
my knees. (What joy)? Completed the
walk by 1915hrs. (Mike)

Lots of medals
for the club: Our
team of children and adult competitors
included Sam Douglas, Ross Brown,
Naomi Schofield, Dale Noble, Patricia
Shaw, Paul Coombes, Neil Heed, Connor
Heed and Alex Gregory. Dale took his
usual role as team captain and performed
a good job at motivating our players
from the club through their different
heats in the event.
Everybody from the club competed to
a high level and represented Blackpool
very well. Ross Brown, our youngest
competitor at eight years old lost
by a close decision in his second
fight and showed everybody at the
event the tenacity he's known for
in the club. Naomi, returned from
the World Championships in Florida
last year as a seasoned competitor
and demonstrated her skills, winning
one of her fights 10-0 and taking
home the gold from her category.
"Dale
received the silver medal in a close
final with the NSKA champion. Paul,
Connor and Alex all fought well with
some close decisions and narrowly
missing out on medal positions. Neil
Heed, our oldest team player was fighting
as a veteran (over 35 years) and had
some of the competitions most experienced
competitors in his category. Neil
battled his way through to earn a
bronze medal, a national seed of number
3 in the UK and a place on the British
team. "Well done to all the competitors
and at next years nationals, we hope
to have our biggest and most successful
team ever" |
